About the Flu

The flu is a virus that can cause respiratory (nose, throat and lung) sickness.  There are many kinds of the flu, such as seasonal flu and novel H1N1 flu (also known as “swine” flu). You can protect yourself from the flu by taking a few simple actions.

Things you can do:

  • Stay home if you are sick. Keep your kids home if they are sick.
  • Wash your hands often. Use soap and warm water or hand sanitizer.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes. Try coughing or sneezing into your sleeve.
  • Get a seasonal flu vaccine each year. To find a seasonal flu shot clinic near you, click here.
  • Get the novel H1N1 flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available to you. To find an H1N1 flu shot clinic near you, click here or call the Anoka County Immunization Information Line at 763-323-6100. Certain groups are a priority for receiving the vaccine first.
  • If you are worried, talk to your doctor. Antiviral drugs may be prescribed for some people with the flu. Click here for more details on treatment with antiviral medications.
  • Learn more by visiting the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the Minnesota Department of Health.
